How to find out if your drug has been recalled

On Behalf of | Mar 15, 2018 | Uncategorized |

Many Houston residents take prescription or over-the-counter medication each year or have a medical device. These medications and devices are important for their health and generally do what they are supposed to do. But what happens when a drug or medical device is recalled? How do you find out about this important information and if you have an unsafe drug?

Over the last few years the number of recalls for medical devices and drugs have risen. After a compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts was found to have caused fungal meningitis, killing more than 60 people, the FDA has cracked down on drug manufacturers. Many times a healthcare provider or pharmacy will alert a patient if their drug or medical device has been recalled. Other ways for patients to find out this important information includes checking out the FDA’s recall website. This will list recalled items for all FDA regulated items. Recalls.gov is a government website that lists all known recalls for food, devices, cars, etc.

Social media can also help with drug and medical device recalls. The FDA has a Twitter feed, @FDArecalls, which sends out information regarding recalls along with the official statement. The FDA also has a Podcast which focuses on drug safety. And a patient can sign up for a customizable email alert that will alert them of a recall of their specific drug or medical device.

Drug manufacturers have a duty to protect their patients from serious injury. When they are negligent in their duty, patients can suffer a serious injury or even death. If a person believes they have been affected by a dangerous drug or medical device, they may want to speak with a legal professional skilled in drugs and medical devices. Compensation may be available for unexpected medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages.
