Clark, Burnett, Love & Lee - Gulf of mexico oil spill attorneys

Attention Gulf Coast Residents: Were You or a Loved One Injured in the Deepwater Horizon Blast?  Is the Resulting Oil Spill Threatening Your Business, Property or Livelihood?  We Can Help.

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sank off the coast of Louisiana.  In addition to the death and injury caused by the initial blast, experts fear that disastrous amounts of crude oil are contaminating the ocean waters daily.  Crude oil continues to move inland, threatening communities along the Gulf Coast and those that depend on the Gulf waters for their livelihood.

What once seemed to be a tragic occurrence that took the lives of 11 workers and injured others both physically and emotionally; now appears to be developing into an environmental and property disaster of catastrophic proportions.  The impact is unprecedented; the outcome is uncertain.  How severe will the damages be?  How much will it cost to clean up the spill?  Will those affected be properly compensated or will those responsible fail to pay legitimate claims without aggressive tactics?

In this time of certainty, one thing is clear: whether you were injured in the initial blast or fear that the catastrophe will affect your residence, your business, and your livelihood, the attorneys of Clark, Burnett, Love & Lee can help.  We are committed to holding those responsible accountable for the damage caused by the explosion and resulting crude oil spill.  While we do not know the final outcome, our attorneys are available to meet with you to explain your legal rights and how you can protect yourself from the catastrophic affects of this disaster.

What You Can Do Now:

When our former and current clients contact us about a pending disaster – whether it be an approaching hurricane or the threat of a massive oil spill looming in the Gulf – one of the recurring questions is “what can I do?”  Unfortunately, although there is little anyone can do to prevent a pending tragedy; you can be prepared to help insure any damages will be properly compensated.

One of the most important things we tell our clients is to “document, document, and document!”  Although it may seem that you will never forget the disastrous consequences of the oil spill, you must remember that memories fade over time, witnesses disappear, and documents get misplaced.  Being organized and documenting any damages to your commercial property, business, or residence is the first step in getting back where you belong.  Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Keep Records of Who You Talk To: Throughout this process; you will likely have to talk to a number of different people from different agencies, be it governmental, environmental, insurance, or other industries.  Keep a detailed and accurate record of every conversation you have, including the date, time, location and person to whom you spoke and what they tell you.  Keep copies of all letters or other documents you send or receive.  Locate and speak to witnesses of any damage and aftermath.  If you or a loved one experienced a personal injury, keep records of all doctors, hospitals, and medical bills.  Photograph injuries and the recovery process.  Make a list of a physical and emotional injuries and limitations experienced.

Thoroughly Inspect Your Property: If it is safe to enter your property, you should do a thorough walk through of your property to inspect any damage to your home or business. Walk through each room and the exterior of the property.  Examine your contents or business inventory to see what has been damaged or no longer functions.  Make a detailed list of all damages by room.

Document All of Your Damages: Again, this is one of the most important things that you can do.  You will need evidence of the condition of the property after the disaster to prove your damages.  Take detailed pictures of all damages to catalogue all losses and the clean-up process.  Both commercial and residential owners should make a detailed inventory of damaged property, including dates and places of purchase, purchase price and current location.  If you have photos prior to the damage, or receipts of purchase for major items, you should locate those for your records as well.  Review your insurance policy for any potential coverage, such as property damage or business income loss.  Business owners should gather documentation that shows income from previous years so that financial comparisons can be made and should document all lost income, cancelled reservations, missed business opportunities, employee costs, and out-of-pocket expenses related directly to the spill.

If you have any questions on how document your property damage, loss in property value, contamination of property, loss of income, loss of employment, or loss of business opportunities, call us today for a free consultation at 1-888-529-5222 or use our online form.
