Biomet hip replacement under scrutiny

Hip replacement is a popular surgery for many Houston residents. New hips can help people with mobility issues regain a normal life. But sometimes an implant device can turn out to be a defective medical device and cause more harm than good. One type of hip replacement, the Biomet hip, has resulted in many unexpected side effects.

The Biomet M2A Magnum hip replacement has caused many issues for unsuspecting patients. The hip replacement was pulled from the market in 2010 because the manufacturer discovered it failed earlier than older implants. But patients were reporting some serious side effects. These patients reported serious side effects including pain and reduced movement because there were metal parts rubbing against each other. There has also been a high level of cobalt measured in these patients which can cause vertigo, blindness, headaches and other side effects. Many patients have had to have these hip replacements prematurely replaced.

In February 2014 Biomet agreed to a multimillion dollar settlement. This settlement is dispersed to qualified patients who received a Biomet M2A hip implant and later had to have it replaced. The base payment to these patients is $200,000. These implants have not been recalled but many patients may be affected by this settlement. Patients who have a Biomet hip replacement may want to contact a legal professional skilled in drugs and medical devices for additional information.

Victims of defective medical devices can suffer from many unexpected adverse effects. These medical device companies should be held responsible for their negligence.
