HIV/AIDS and PrEP medications may cause bone and kidney issues

People living with HIV/AIDS know that, until there is a cure, they will have to take daily medications in order to manage it.

If you are living with the autoimmune disease, you may have seen advertisements for medications with the brand names Viread and Truvada. People with a high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS sometimes use Truvada as a preventative (PrEP) drug, and doctors sometimes prescribe Viread to people diagnosed with the disease.

Patients with prescriptions for these drugs have recently sued the drug manufacturer. Gilead Sciences Inc. makes Viread and Truvada, which both contain tenofovir disproxil fumarate (TDF).

The plaintiffs, or the patients, say that the TDF in the medications they took caused severe kidney and bone complications. They blame Gilead Sciences Inc. for improperly disclosing important information.

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)

The plaintiffs are accusing the manufacturer of inadequately warning them about the dangerous side effects of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), including severe kidney and bone problems.

TDF could cause your kidneys to fail. It could also cause your bones to become thin or soft, which could lead to pain or injury.

Is Gilead Sciences Inc. liable for damages?

Prescription drug manufacturers are responsible for disclosing any harmful side effects they know about to medical providers and pharmacists. Any manufacturer who chooses to hide that information would probably be breaking the law.
