Vaginal mesh and sling products were produced to treat pelvic conditions in women such as pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). These conditions generally occur when the muscles in the pelvic region weaken and are no longer able to hold organs in place, allowing them to fall or cause incontinence.
The transvaginal mesh devices, such as TVM mesh or TVT slings, were marketed to retain the organs, hold them in place with a hammock and treat issues of urine leakage. The mesh is implanted in an outpatient procedure. It is inserted either vaginally or laparoscopically through a small incision.
While surgical mesh has been successfully used for decades for other applications, such as hernia repair, this treatment was not designed to accommodate the changing dynamics and hormone levels of women’s pelvic regions. This caused thousands of reports of pain and serious complications.
This includes instances where the mesh perforated organs, the uterus, vaginal wall, urethra or bladder. In other cases, the mesh migrated to other parts of the body or eroded to the point where multiple surgeries could not remove all of the fragments. The impact on the women who received this treatment is staggering, including deep and lasting physical and emotional pain, as well as potentially life-threatening injuries.

- Urinary incontinence
- Fistula formation or holes between organs

- Recurrence of pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence
