With the New Year upon us losing weight is on the minds of many Houston residents. It seems like there are also a million products out there to help us lose the weight as well. But not all of these products are safe and a dangerous drug can cause a serious injury.
The FDA has recalled some weight-loss products that have drugs in them that are not listed. The products are marketed as natural aids to lose weight but the FDA warns consumers to stop using them immediately. The unlisted drugs include sibutramine which is an appetite suppressant. This drug has been known to increase blood pressure and cause serious injuries to those with coronary disease. Another drug that is in these products is phenolphthalein which was once used in over the counter laxatives and can cause cancer, irregular heartbeat and gastrointestinal disturbances. There are 14 products included on this recall going by names such as Xcel, Evolve and Infinity.
When a consumer inadvertently takes a dangerous drug they can be subjected to a serious injury or even death. Drug manufacturers have a duty to make sure their products are safe and that any side effects are well documented and communicated. If a person believes they were harmed because of a defective drug may want to speak with a legal professional skilled in drugs and medical devices. An attorney can review the medical records, investigate the drug and drug company and get answers as to what happened to cause the injury. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, pain and suffering and other damages.
Defective drugs can affect a family forever. It is important to hold these drug companies responsible so that they don’t harm anyone else.
