Is your medical device susceptible to hacking?

On Behalf of | Mar 15, 2018 | Uncategorized |

Each year medical devices become more and more technologically advanced. Although medical device technology has greatly improved a number of lives in the Houston area, there are safety concerns surrounding a device that have not been adequately tested. One concern about medical devices is that they may be susceptible to a cyber attack.Medical device manufacturers not only need to make sure their device works properly but also that it is not vulnerable to a cyber attack.

In recent years cybersecurity has been an issue that is frequently reported on in the media. Stealing private information and shutting down random systems seems to be a weekly occurrence. Those who have medical devices may be alarmed to know that their medical device may have the ability to be hacked. One such device, the Hospira’s Symbiq infusion pump, uses a computer to deliver medication over a period of time. The FDA and Homeland Security warns that this device may be vulnerable to hackers. Hackers can remotely access the implant device and launch an attack.

Medical device manufacturers have to make sure their product is safe from causing harm to the patient. When there is a defective medical device design and the implant device is vulnerable to hackers it can lead to serious injuries. A medical device manufacturer should be held accountable for their negligence. If a patient has been affected by a defective medical device they may want to speak with a legal professional. An attorney can research the medical device, review medical records and determine what happened to cause the unexpected injury. The victim may be able to collect compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering and other damages.

Testing and making sure their medical device is safe is just one of the safety checks that medical device companies need to do. Cyber security is an additional threat to medical devices and needs to be addressed to make sure patients are not harmed.
