Women who are pregnant are often filled with excitement regarding the birth of their baby. But pregnant women are often bombarded with things they should and shouldn’t do during pregnancy. These include not eating certain types of fish, taking their prenatal vitamins and probably most important is making sure their prescription medication is safe to take. Prescription medication can have dangerous drug side effects for pregnant women and their unborn babies.
Almost every Houston resident will take a prescription medication in their lifetime. Most of these medications are safe and effective but the risks to pregnant women are often times unknown. The majority of pregnant women will take a prescription medication while pregnant that may cause serious injuries to the unborn baby.
One medication that many pregnant women take is Zofran. Zofran is frequently prescribed to pregnant women to curb the nausea that can occur because of morning sickness. Although close to one million pregnant women are prescribed Zofran each year it has never been approved to treat morning sickness nausea. There haven’t been any studies showing that the medication is safe and effective for pregnant women. There have been occurrences of serious injuries for pregnant women who take Zofran and birth injuries.
There are other medications available that have been proven to be safe and effective in treating morning sickness. Pregnant women should be careful and do their research regarding any prescription medication they are on.
